The Invisible Load

A meditation for the person who holds everything together and nobody notices

Welcome.

This one is for the person who does the things nobody sees.

You replaced the toilet paper before anyone had to ask. You remembered the appointment nobody else had written down and wiped down the counter one more time before bed, because that is what you do.

Nobody said thank you because nobody saw it. That is the invisible load. It is not dramatic enough to complain about, but it is heavy enough to make you tired in a way you cannot quite explain to anyone.

Take a deep breath. I want you to think of one invisible thing you did this week. Not the big stuff people noticed. The small thing that kept everything from falling apart. The one you did without thinking because if you did not do it, nobody else was going to.

See yourself doing it. Now say two words to yourself, silently. “I noticed.”

That is it. I noticed. Because the reason the invisible load is so exhausting is not the work itself. It is the feeling that none of it registers with anyone. That you could stop doing all of it tomorrow and it would take days before someone even asked what happened.

You are the reason things hold together. And even if nobody else sees that today, you can.

Your Tiny Healing Habit for today is “The Invisible Credit.” Once today, after you do one of those quiet, unseen things, stop for two seconds and say to yourself, “I did that.” Say it like it matters. Because it does. You are not looking for applause. You are just refusing to let your own work be invisible to you.
