The Autopilot

A meditation for when your body showed up this week but your mind did not

Welcome.

This is for the middle of your week, when you realize you have been going through the motions. Your body has been showing up all day but your mind checked out somewhere around Tuesday afternoon.

You might be washing dishes while mentally composing an email, or eating lunch with one hand and scrolling your phone with the other. Your hands are doing one thing and your head is somewhere else entirely. You are on autopilot.

Take a deep breath right now. Feel your feet on the floor. Not in a big spiritual way. Just notice that you have feet and they are touching something solid.

Now look at one object near you. Really look at it. Notice its color, its texture, whether the light is hitting it. You have probably looked past this object a hundred times this week without actually seeing it.

That is what autopilot does. It keeps you functioning but it does not let you be present. And a week lived on autopilot is a week you will not remember by Saturday.

You do not have to be mindful all day. That is exhausting and nobody actually does it. But you can come back into the room for thirty seconds at a time, and those seconds add up. They are the difference between a week that happened to you and a week you were actually in.

Your Tiny Healing Habit for today is “The Room Check.” A few times this afternoon, stop whatever you are doing and say to yourself where your body actually is. “I am in the kitchen.” “I am at my desk.” Say it like you are planting a flag. Feel your attention land back in your body and stay there, even just for a moment.
